Boylan to meet Swedish Climate Activist Greta Thunberg

14 April, 2019 - by Senator Lynn Boylan

Sinn Féin MEP for Dublin Lynn Boylan will meet Greta Thunberg at the EU Parliament Environment Committee in Strasbourg next Tuesday at 1pm.

Speaking from Dublin, Ms Boylan said;

“Next Tuesday, the formidable climate action activist, Greta Thunberg, will address the EU Parliament Environment Committee.  As the only Irish MEP with speaking rights at this exchange of views, I look forward to putting forward the Left and Sinn Féin’s proposals for how we take the far reaching and radical steps that are required to tackle climate change.

“I stood with the student climate strikers in Dublin and was inspired by their passion but also by the level of awareness that the young activists had.  They had a fundamental understanding that in order to tackle climate change, we need system change.  No amount of green washing is going to satisfy their demands.

“Rightly, they called out those politicians who showed up for a photo opportunity but who’s track record on climate action is dismal.  Greta Thunberg and the climate activists are speaking truth to power and that has the political establishment worried.

“Last month, three political groups, including my own GUE/NGL, invited Greta to address the EU Parliament at the plenary session, but the invitation was vetoed by ALDE and the EPP, the political groups of Fianna Fail and Fine Gael.

“I am delighted that Greta has finally been given the opportunity to address MEPs and I hope that the politicians heed her message.”
