‘Integrity and genuine power-sharing are non-negotiable’ – O’Neill

15 April, 2019 - by Michelle O'Neill

The need for integrity and genuine power-sharing in all political institutions is non-negotiable, Sinn Féin Deputy Leader Michelle O’Neill has said.

Speaking at the launch of the party’s election manifesto in Ballymena this morning, Michelle O’Neill commented: “This election is a massive opportunity for people to elect strong, passionate, able republican candidates who will be the community voice in city halls and council chambers the length and breadth of Ireland.

“Sinn Féin council teams are making a difference - investing in first class public services and community facilities and ensuring a fair deal for ratepayers.

“Those same services are under threat from the combination of Brexit and savage austerity cuts - both of which have been forced upon us by a British Government which refuses to recognise the democratic wishes of people here who are opposed to Brexit.

“This government is also in hock to the DUP, continuing to stand over a shocking denial of rights to citizens that would not be tolerated anywhere else on these islands.

“A strengthened Sinn Féin team can and will combat this destructive agenda.

“Sinn Féin has brought Irish interests to the heart of Europe in a sustained and determined effort to ensure there will be no hardening of the border or undermining of the Good Friday Agreement.

“We are determined to end the DUP’s denial of rights.

“We are equally determined that there can be no place for arrogance, sectarianism, homophobia and racism in any of our political institutions and that includes council chambers.

“Integrity and genuine power-sharing in all our political institutions are not negotiable. They are essential. For public confidence and for good public services.

“This election is your chance to assert that fact and again demand equality, rights and respect for all citizens.”
