‘DUP ignoring the needs of farmers’ - Anderson
Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has accused the DUP of ignoring the needs of farmers to pursue their hard Brexit agenda.
Speaking from the launch of Sinn Féin’s local election manifesto in Ballymena today, Martina Anderson MEP said:
“As the only anti-Brexit MEP in the North who has stood up against the Brexiteers and defended all sectors, I have consistently highlighted the unmitigated damage Brexit will inflict on our society.
“The fact is that Brexit will be disastrous for the farming and agriculture sectors in the North, where there are more smaller farms.
“I have worked with the EU to support the case for special arrangements for farmers and traders in the North but the British Government have never supported this so there is no prospect of them replacing these subsidies.
“Report after report has outlined the concerns of the farming sector, and industry experts have proclaimed that farm subsidies could be halved by 2030 due to the Tory/DUP Brexit.
“DUP brexiteers simply sneer at such evidence rather than represent the needs of farmers and the democratic entitlements of the majority who voted against Brexit in the first place.”
