Sinn Féin welcome publication of HIQA report on accessible PrEP - Senator Fintan Warfield
Sinn Féin spokesperson on LGBTQI rights Senator Fintan Warfield has welcomed the publication of the health technology assessment (HTA) of a pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) programme for populations at substantial risk of sexual acquisition of HIV.
Senator Warfield said:
“There were 531 new diagnoses of HIV in 2018, an 8% increase from the previous year. The responses to rising HIV rates in recent years have ultimately not had an effect on bringing down transmission so a programme in which PrEP is accessible to those who are vulnerable to acquisition of HIV must be welcomed.
“The HTA report published today by HIQA is very welcome. It confirms that PrEP accessibility is one of the most vital tools in combating the state’s rising HIV rates.
“It also states that accessible PrEP is far more cost-effective that the current cost of treating those who become HIV positive.
“The report shows an urgent need for a radical response to increasing HIV rates if we are to reverse the trend.
“However, I would also assert any PrEP programme needs to address our under resourced testing services.
“I encourage all interested bodies to partake in the public consultation that has also been announced by HIQA."
