Sinn Féin calls for multi-agency task-force to tackle Drogheda crime feud

29 April, 2019 - by Imelda Munster TD, Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD

Sinn Féin has called on the Government to establish a specific task force for the Drogheda area to tackle the current feud and spike in related crime.

Sinn Féin TD for Louth, Imelda Munster, and Sinn Féin Justice spokesperson Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD have said that a similar cross agency approach is needed to the one taken in Dublin’s North Inner City.

Teachta Munster said;

“I have raised this ongoing feud on several occasions with Minister and he can’t continue to turn a blind eye. We urgently need to have the same focus and additional resources that Limerick and parts of Dublin got to stamp this out and we need them now.

“Is this government going to continue to stand idly by and wait until an innocent passerby is killed before they give the resources needed. There have been over seventy serious incidents ranging from indiscriminate shootings, petrol bombs on homes, intimidation, threats and attacks. We have had enough.

“We need a firm and robust response. Firstly, there is a need for a much heightened presence. We are alarmed and worried that there was a fall from 124 Gardaí in Drogheda to 109 in February 2019. It is the opposite that should be happening. The same number of Gardaí are in the town as in 2009, despite rapid population growth.

“We need Gardaí on the street to ensure that crime is prevented, and solved effectively, and that those responsible for terrorising Drogheda are put away.

“We will be seeking a meeting with Deputy Commissioner Policing and Security John Twomey to discuss this.”

Teachta Ó Laoghaire added;

“We need a cross agency approach to tackle these issues on a long term basis. Building on the example of the North East Inner City task-force, we are calling for a task-force made of up Drogheda County Council, the local community and voluntary sector, An Garda Síochána, key Government Departments, and local drugs and youth workers.

“This task-force should develop a long term strategy to tackle this crime and prioritise investment in the neighbourhoods worst affected by this feud.”
