Hospital group and UHW management must appear before Oireachtas Health Committee - David Cullinane TD
Sinn Féin TD for Waterford David Cullinane with his Waterford Oireachtas colleagues has written to the Chair of the Oireachtas Health Committee asking that hospital management and the hospital group appear before the committee as a matter of urgency.
The move comes after Deputy Cullinane met with the board of the South/South West Hospital Group and UHW management earlier today where they were unable to substantiate claims made by four consultant pathologists about the state of the mortuary and post-mortem services at UHW and of decomposing bodies left on hospital trollies.
Deputy Cullinane said;
"Earlier today I and Waterford Oireachtas members met with the management of UHW and the SSWHG and discussed with them the ongoing and serious concerns raised by four consultant pathologists about the state of the hospital's post-mortem and mortuary services.
"The board failed to verify any of the concerns raised at the meeting. In fact, they said there is no evidence to substantiate the claims. We are now seeing claims and counterclaims being aired without coming any closer to the truth surrounding the facilities at UHW.
"After the meeting I signed a letter written by a cross-party grouping of Waterford TDs to the chair of the Oireachtas joint committee on Health and requested they invite the board of UHW in for questioning.
"Bereaved families in Waterford and across the South-East deserve the truth about their loved ones.
"The claims raise serious questions that must be answered. By appearing before the Oireachtas Health Committee, we hope to get to the bottom of this issue and find out what the true state of affairs is in UHW."
