Boylan joins families of Stardust Fire in calling for fitting memorial
Sinn Féin MEP for Dublin Lynn Boylan has today called on the future owners of the Butterly Business Park to work with the families of the Stardust fire in ensuring that finally a fitting memorial is incorporated into the future development.
Speaking after a press conference organised by the Justice for the 48 Stardust Relative’s Committee, Ms Boylan said;
“Since the horrific fire of 1981, Mr Butterly has never meaningfully engaged with the relatives. The latest announcement of the sale of the site is a further example of that. The families were given no prior notice of the sale and instead found out through a newspaper advertisement.
“The fact that, up until this year, there was nothing at all on the site to mark the tragedy is further proof of the lack of respect that the owners have shown. It was left to the families themselves to erect a plaque with the victims’ names.
“I am calling on whoever buys this site to immediately engage with the relatives to ensure that they are consulted on the development plans and that their wishes for a memorial garden are accommodated. This is an opportunity to help correct the decades of disrespect.”
