DUP should apologise after candidate uses offensive language - Nelson

1 May, 2019 - by Catherine Nelson

Sinn Féin councillor Catherine Nelson has said the DUP should apologise after one of its candidates used an offensive and derogatory term for people with disabilities.

Councillor Nelson said DUP candidate Robert Smith used the offensive term on social media after the theft of his motorcycle.

“There is no place for this type of offensive language in our society.

"Regardless of circumstance, such offensive and derogatory language is disgusting and distasteful.

"Many people face challenges and upsets in their lives, but someone aspiring to elected office should set an example.

“The causal use of such offensive language is indicative of the DUP’s attitude towards rights and equality.

"Mr Smith and the DUP should apologise for the remark immediately without excuse or equivocation.”
