Cork children still in limbo after 10 month CAMHS referral freeze – Buckley

2 May, 2019 - by Pat Buckley TD

Sinn Féin Mental Health spokesperson Pat Buckley TD has described the continued freeze on CAMHS referrals in Cork North Lee as “a complete system failure and a stain on the government’s record”.

The Cork East TD said:

“Last August, I highlighted that GPs and other health professionals in Cork had been told new referrals to CAMHS in Cork North Lee would be going straight onto a waiting list.

“I believed this to be extremely dangerous as prolonged response times for young people seeking assistance and treatment for mental health issues have a drastic effect on recovery.

“Now nearly 10 months on, the situation continues; children are being left on waiting lists or their families are forced to pay for private care many simply cannot afford. The HSE may as well not exist for these families. It is an utter disgrace.

“Frontline staff working in CAMHS are doing their best to keep things going. They provide excellent care to those who receive it, but the government are failing utterly to support them.”
