Gerry Adams TD attends Dundalk event to honour John de Chastelain
Former Sinn Féin leader and TD for Louth Gerry Adams today attended a civic reception in Dundalk Institute of Technology (DKIT) to celebrate the naming of the DKIT library after John de Chastelain, the former Chair of the Independent International Commission on Decommissioning (IICD).
Teachta Adams said:
“I was very pleased to attend today’s event in DKIT to honour John de Chastelain.
"In 1995 John was one of three international members of the Body established to report on decommissioning along with former US Senator George Mitchel and former Finnish Prime Minister Harri Holkeri.
"Later he became the Chair of the Independent International Commission on Decommissioning.
"For more than a decade General de Chastelain played a pivotal role in the peace process, the achievement of the Good Friday Agreement and to a resolution of the arms issue. His patience, forbearance, and commitment to the peace process is deeply appreciated.”
