Lynn Boylan MEP - “Do Fitzgerald and Durkan support Fine Gael’s proposal for a massive increase in defence spending?”
Sinn Féin Dublin MEP Lynn Boylan has called on Fine Gael's Dublin EU candidates Mark Durkan and Frances Fitzgerald to say whether they support the bizarre decision of their MEPs to vote for a massive increase in defence spending - billions, which could be spent on building more than 20,000 homes.
Lynn Boylan said:
“Over the last five years Fine Gael MEPs have systematically attacked Ireland’s position of military neutrality and have also bizarrely proposed a massive increase in defence spending.
“In December 2017, Fine Gael MEPs voted in favour of an EU wide commitment to spending 2% of GDP on defence, something which would mean increasing the defence budget in this State to almost €7 billion.
“At a time when we have a housing emergency in this State and a healthcare system in a state of a perpetual crisis that is an absolutely reckless position. The billions that they want to spend on defence would build over 20,000 homes - that would be the right thing to do.
“It is crucial on the 24th May that we elect Irish MEPs who are going to Europe to fight for Ireland and to fight for ordinary people, not MEPs who want to cheerlead for the European militarisation agenda and lead us down a path that leads to the establishment of an EU Army.
“This is not scaremongering. Just two days ago Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael’s groups in the EU Parliament - EPP and ALDE – stated clearly that they want an EU Army.
“We need MEPs who will stand up for Ireland’s position as a neutral State and ensure that position is understood and respected by the European Union.“
