Local government election results show growing demand for equality – Mary Lou McDonald
Uachtarán Shinn Féin Mary Lou McDonald TD has said the support for the party in the north's local government elections shows a growing demand for change.
Mary Lou McDonald said:
"I would like to pay respect to all candidates who contested these elections.
“Sinn Féin made gains in a number of areas across the north, including in areas where Sinn Féin have previously not had any elected representatives.
“I would like to thank all those who voted for Sinn Féin candidates, congratulate all those elected and extend solidarity with those who fell short today. There will be another day.
“Sinn Féin councillors will continue to work with other parties to deliver real change in the lives of citizens.
“The votes are now in and this election has been marked by the growth in support for progressive politics, inclusion, equality and change.
"There is an onus on all of the progressive parties to use their mandates in the coming talks to deliver equality, respect and the rights of all and re-establish genuine power-sharing and institutions operating to the highest standards.
“The people have spoken, a new and more progressive society is emerging.
“It is the responsibility of political leaders to reflect on these results and commit to resolve the outstanding issues in the coming talks.
