Gildernew vows to oppose new Fermanagh fracking bid

8 May, 2019 - by Michelle Gildernew

Sinn Féin MP Michelle Gildernew has vowed to ‘rigorously oppose’ the latest bid to begin fracking in County Fermanagh.

The Fermanagh and South Tyrone MP was speaking after energy company Tamboran Resources made a fresh application for a licence to evaluate the natural gas in the shale and sandstone rocks in the south west of the county.

Michelle Gildernew said: “This company last attempted to carry out test drilling in 2014, but faced widespread community and political opposition. That has not changed. In fact, I believe the opposition will only have grown over that time as the damage caused by fracking internationally becomes more evident.

"Sinn Féin remains totally opposed to hydraulic fracking anywhere on the island of Ireland and this latest application will be rigorously opposed.

"The area they want to drill in is renowned for its beauty and its environment and it should not be put at risk by fracking.

"We remain opposed to fracking and will strongly object to any and all applications to carry out fracking wherever they are."
