“Sorry” isn’t good enough on Waterford mortuary debacle – Mary Lou McDonald

8 May, 2019 - by Mary Lou McDonald TD

The Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald has reiterated calls for a public investigation into conditions at the mortuary in University Hospital Waterford.

Speaking in the Dáil Ms McDonald said:

“Over the weekend the Taoiseach was forced to apologise to four pathologists at University Hospital Waterford, whose very serious assertions regarding unacceptable conditions at the mortuary he dismissed out of hand.

“The pathologists outlined the unacceptable and undignified conditions at the mortuary which saw bodies being left on trolleys, in corridors, leaking body fluids on the floor.

“We now know that the State Pathologist has directed the Garda Síochána to avoid using the mortuary due to concerns of evidence contamination.

“The Taoiseach was right to apologise but on this occasion ‘sorry’ isn’t good enough. It is now time for action.

“I am calling on the government to take the next step, commit to a fully independent investigation of this issue, ensure that full facts are heard and tell the people of Waterford and the South East definitively when a new mortuary will be built at the hospital.”
