Anderson urges immediate ban on fracking
Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson MEP has reiterated a call for an immediate ban on fracking here, due to the health and environmental threat it poses.
She was speaking after energy company Tamboran Resources made a fresh application for a licence to evaluate the natural gas in the shale and sandstone rocks in the south west of the county.
Martina Anderson said: “Sinn Féin has consistently opposed fracking at every level of government. I hosted an EU anti-fracking conference in Fermanagh in 2015, bringing many campaigners together, including leading expert on fracking, Professor Tony Ingraffea. It was clear then, as it is now, that the people of Fermanagh do not stand to benefit from this destructive method of extracting gas from our country.
“It will line the pockets of multinational corporations, while potentially contaminating ground and drinking water, threatening public health and the natural biodiversity of Fermanagh.
“The creation of sustainable jobs and incomes for Fermanagh does not lie in fracking. The tax from the industry will go straight to the British exchequer and we in the north will still have the same amount in the form of a block grant.
“Fracking will not help our economy, it will only harm our environment.
“We need to urgently decarbonise our societies. The real potential for job creation and economic growth in Fermanagh lies in the development of clean, sustainable and renewable sources of energy.
“We need to ban fracking in the north of Ireland immediately."
