The Sinn Féin European team is in Dublin and Belfast today to launch the party’s European Election manifesto.
Speaking in Dublin the Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald said that Sinn Féin MEPs are fighting for Ireland in Europe.
Ms McDonald said:
“Leo Varadkar and Micheál Martin preside over a system that fails ordinary working people and families. A vote for Sinn Féin in this election will send a clear message to the government that hard-pressed working people, who are just getting by, will not tolerate the status quo.
“Sinn Féin MEPs are Ireland’s representatives in Europe. Five years ago Team Sinn Féin went to Europe to fight for a better deal.
“We stood up for the Good Friday Agreement and for Irish interests in the face of the Tory Brexit agenda. We were first to pursue the idea of Special Designated Status for the north of Ireland within Europe – a policy which has now been widely accepted.
“We defended our national sovereignty and neutrality and opposed the transfer of further powers to Europe.
“We proactively pursued EU support for Irish reunification and we showed ourselves to be progressive voices fighting for Ireland in Europe.
“Sinn Féin will not accept an Ireland, or a Europe, for elites at the expense of the least well off. Sinn Féin MEPs deliver. We’ve shown what we can do and with a strong mandate our MEPs can continue to fight and push for a better deal for the Irish people.”
