Time for a rent tax relief - Pearse Doherty TD

13 May, 2019 - by Pearse Doherty TD

Sinn Féin Finance spokesperson Pearse Doherty TD has called for a rent tax relief latest Daft.ie Report which shows the average new rent across the state is now €1,366 while the number of available properties is the lowest since the Daft.ie reports started in 2006.

Speaking today Deputy Doherty said;

“The latest Daft.ie figures confirm once again that sky-high rents are continuing to rise putting already struggling renters under even more pressure.

“Sinn Féin has proposed a rent tax relief to give renters a break.

“We have also proposed a rent freeze and in conjunction with a massive social housing building programme.

“A tax relief equal to one month’s rent should be available to all renters in receipt of any State assistance. At the time of the last Budget such a relief would have cost €265m.

“Fine Gael has been proven to be incapable of dealing with the housing crisis.

“Renters are at the coalface of this crisis and need immediate protection while the supply issue is dealt with.”
