'Send clear message by maximising pro-remain vote' - McDonald
Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald TD has called on people to send a clear message that the north rejects Brexit by maximising the pro-remain vote and electing two anti-Brexit MEPs.
Speaking at the launch of Sinn Féin's European election manifesto in Belfast today, Mary Lou McDonald said:
"Sinn Féin MEPs are Ireland’s representatives in Europe. Five years ago Team Sinn Féin went to Europe to fight for a better deal.
“We stood up for the Good Friday Agreement and for Irish interests in the face of the Tory Brexit agenda.
"The people of the north did not support Brexit; they voted to reject it.
"We were first to pursue the idea of Special Designated Status for the north of Ireland within Europe – a policy which has now been widely accepted.
"I believe we can return two candidates opposed to Brexit and that is why I am asking people to vote Martina Anderson number one then to transfer to other candidates opposed to Brexit.
"This election is about Brexit and having the voice of the majority heard. Sinn Féin MEPs deliver. We’ve shown what we can do and with a strong mandate our MEPs can continue to fight and push for a better deal for the Irish people.”
