More investment needed in Waste management - not cuts

31 October, 2005

Sinn Féin Environment spokesperson Philip McGuigan has asked Direct rule minister Jeff Rooker to confirm or deny that the DoE is to reduce the waste management grant to local councils. Philip McGuigan is meeting Jeff Rooker tomorrow, Tuesday 1st November, he will also raise the issue of planning at the meeting.

Mr McGuigan said:

"It is my belief from information that central government is considering reducing the amount of money to local councils here in the North to deal with waste management issues.

"I want clarification on this issue.  Councils are under ever increasing pressures around the issue of waste management and meeting EU directives. The money from central government is vital to the services that they can provide.

"I am suggesting that instead of the DoE contemplating reducing this grant that they increase their support for local councils.  If the North as a whole is to meet it statutory targets of diverting waste from landfills and avoid huge fines from Europe it needs government support." ENDS
