Gerry Adams TD thanks candidates, families and voters
Sinn Féin Louth TD Gerry Adams has thanked the party’s thirteen candidates who stood in the local government election, their families and the electorate who voted Sinn Féin.
Gerry Adams said:
“I want to thank the thirteen Sinn Féin candidates who stood for Louth County Council in the local government election. I also want to thank their families, who rarely saw them in recent months as the candidates canvassed, leafleted and worked hard to get elected.
"The candidates were very ably supported by party activists who were with them every day on the campaign trail. Together they fought a very positive campaign and demonstrated enormous passion and integrity.
While it was a disappointing election the party’s share of the vote in Louth still leaves us as the largest party in the constituency and one of the two largest parties in terms of seats. Our task now is to learn the lessons of this campaign and prepare for the next election. That work has commenced.
The polling day opinion poll which showed up to 77% of voters supporting a United Ireland is significant. It is further evidence that there is a widespread desire to achieve Irish unity. That remains Sinn Féin’s political priority.
Finally, thank you again to all of the Sinn Féin candidates, their families, our party activists and the electorate who supported us in this election.”
