Tories need to realise DUP does not speak for the north - Hazzard

28 May, 2019 - by Chris Hazzard

Sinn Féin MP Chris Hazzard has said the Tory party needs to realise the DUP do not speak for the people of the north on Brexit.

The South Down MP said:

"The suggestion from Tory minister Jeremy Hunt that the DUP should be involved in any future Brexit negotiations is ludicrous and insulting to the electorate in the north.

"It shows yet again how detached the British Tory party is out of touch with reality on the ground in the north of Ireland.

"The DUP do not speak for the people of the north on Brexit and that has been shown once again with the European election results.

"This suggestion obviously has more to do with the Tory leadership contest and Tory contenders attempting to curry favour with the DUP as they use them as pawns in their power games.

"The Tories need to accept the reality that the negotiations have ended; the EU have made it clear that the Withdrawal Agreement and the backstop it contains will not be renegotiated.

"The north must not become collateral damage to the Tory leadership contest and Brexit."
