Ó Muilleoir welcomes Acht Gaeilge initiative
Sinn Féin MLA Máirtín Ó Muilleoir has welcomed the initiative from civic society in which more than 200 leading figures have signed an open letter calling on the British and Irish Governments to implement an Irish Language Act as promised in 2006 St Andrews Agreement.
The South Belfast MLA was commenting after the letter was published in today’s Irish News.
He said: “I welcome today’s initiative from civic society in which over 200 people have put their signature to an open letter to An Taoiseach and the British Prime Minister.
“It is 13 years since the British Government committed to Acht Gaeilge as part of the St. Andrews Agreement. In the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, they were also bound to ensure equality in the North, while the Dublin Government committed to an equivalence of rights north and south.
“Both governments remain in default of those commitments and it is long past time that they began to seriously redress the equality and rights deficit that exists in the North.
“Today’s initiative is a powerful demonstration of the public desire for them to do so and I commend all those involved in organising and signing the letter.
“It is crucial that civic society continues to make its voice heard in the time ahead, particularly if the political negotiations are to find a resolution to the ongoing denial of rights in the North.”
