'Suicide prevention must be a priority' - Flynn
Implementing the suicide prevention strategy must be a priority for the Department of Health, Sinn Féin MLA, Órlaithí Flynn has said.
The West Belfast MLA was commenting after being re-elected Chair of the Assembly’s All-Party Group on Suicide Prevention.
Órlaithí Flynn said: “Over the last year we have continued to push for the publication and implementation of the Protect Life 2 Suicide Prevention Strategy, which would go some way in dealing with this difficult and complex issue.
“I would also like to see progress on the perinatal mental health issue, the under funding of services and to put a special focus on some of the pressures that may be facing people within rural areas.”
The party’s spokesperson for Mental health and suicide prevention added:
“It is a privilege for me to take on this role for a third consecutive year and one which comes with a big responsibility which I in no way underestimate.
“Behind all the statistics of those who have lost their lives through suicide are real people, and families who are still hurting and who lives have been shattered.”
