‘Frustration over Muckamore action plan delays’ - Gildernew
Sinn Féin MLA and Vice-Chair of the Assembly’s All Party group on Learning Disabilities Colm Gildernew has expressed frustration at delays to the Health Department's Action Plan for Muckamore Abbey Hospital.
The Fermanagh South Tyrone MLA was speaking after visiting Muckamore Abbey Hospital today to discuss efforts being made to address failures in care at the site.
He commented: “Six months after the Permanent Secretary for Health announced that ‘action is urgently needed’ we are still waiting for the Department of Health’s Action Plan which was due to be ready in January.
“The timeframe for the resettlement of those facing delayed discharge, set for December 2019, will be a challenge but one which the department must work to achieve.
"Genuine resettlement by the end of the year requires an Action Plan from the department to be delivered.
“At a Sinn Féin organised roundtable in February, providers of community care highlighted to me the difficulties in meeting this timescale particularly given the lack of engagement from the department at that time.
“I also queried in March why the department's identified additional budget pressures didn’t include the cost of resettlement in Muckamore.
"Resettlement of patients facing delayed discharge in Muckamore requires adequate resources.
“There is growing frustration from patients, their families and carers - as well as from staff on the site - at the lack of progress by the department.
"It is important that the broader Health and Social Care System does what it can to ensure safe and compassionate care for those within Muckamore Abbey Hospital and the Department need to lead by example."
