Appalling that Sylva Tukula was so disregarded in death – Ó Laoghaire

7 June, 2019 - by Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD

Sinn Féin Justice spokesperson Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD has expressed his shock and dismay at the revelation that an asylum seeker, Sylva Tukula, was buried without informing her friends and loved ones.

The Cork South-Central TD said:

“This is a deeply sad, quite shocking, and wholly unacceptable situation.

“I find it hard to understand how this could have transpired; one expects that every possible action be taken to ensure people can mourn their loved ones.

“Clearly, this did not happen in this instance. In life, those in direct provision are often hidden from view. It is appalling that Sylva was so disregarded in death as well.

“I am writing to the Minister for Justice to express my anger at this situation and will be raising it in the Dáil with him as well. There are still many questions outstanding. The Department must give a full explanation and make assurances that nothing like this can ever happen again.”
