Report must establish full facts into outsourcing of smear tests to labs not inspected by HSE
Sinn Féin health spokesperson, Deputy Louise O’Reilly, has said that Dr Gabriel Scally’s latest report into the CervicalCheck scandal must establish the full facts into the outsourcing of smear tests to labs not inspected by HSE.
Speaking this morning, Deputy O’Reilly said:
“The latest report into the CervicalCheck scandal will reveal that thousands of smear tests from women in Ireland were outsourced to labs across the United States despite the centres not being inspected by CervicalCheck.
“I hope that the full publication of Dr Gabriel Scally’s report can clarify if this outsourcing to non-inspected labs had an impact on testing and if any mistakes were made.
“I really hope this has not been the case, because there has been too much suffering for affected women and their families, and confidence in the screening programme has been so badly hit.
“However, I must state that the HSE needs to stop making a rod for its own back through actions like this.
“Running a health service is incredibly complex, and nobody is saying for a moment that a health service can be run without mistake or human error, but the HSE has a duty to make sure that it is protecting patients through oversight of outsourced services and that it is protecting the public purse by making sure these services are up to scratch and are not going to result in mistakes and therefore court cases.
“Finally, I genuinely hope this report restores confidence in the CervicalCheck programme - the programme has limitations, but it is invaluable, and it saves lives and will continue to save lives."
