EU clear that the backstop is not up for renegotiation - Carthy
Sinn Féin MEP Matt Carthy has said the EU is clear that the Withdrawal Agreement and the backstop it contains is not up for renegotiation.
Speaking after meeting with the EU's chief Brexit negotiator, the Sinn Féin MEP said:
"I met today with the EU's chief Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier, in Brussels this morning alongside Naomi Long to reiterate Sinn Féin's position that the backstop contained in the Withdrawal Agreement is maintained.
"The EU and Michel Barnier have repeatedly said the Withdrawal Agreement will not be reopened and the backstop will not be renegotiated.
"The Withdrawal Agreement and the backstop it contains is the only deal on the table which would avoid any hardening of the border on the island of Ireland.
"It cannot be wished away by the Tories to the British parliament.
"It is time that the British government and whoever emerges as the new Tory leader hears that unequivocal message coming from the EU loud and clear."
