Brady calls on BBC to reverse licence decision
Sinn Féin MP Mickey Brady has called on the BBC to reverse its decision to scrap free TV licences for all over 75s after it was revealed it was warned that its plan to introduce means testing would hit the most vulnerable pensioners hardest.
Mickey Brady said:
"The announcement by the BBC that it is planning to cut free TV licences for all over 75s by introducing means testing will hit the most vulnerable hardest.
"I have previously criticised the move and now I am calling on the BBC to reverse its decision in light of the fact that it has been revealed that the BBC was fully aware that the move would hit those most in need.
"It commissioned a report in November 2018 which found that only 11 per cent of those who had previously received a free TV licence will continue to do so.
"The BBC knew the impact of this move but it went ahead and did it anyway.
"The now need to reverse this decision immediately.”
