Sinn Féin propose extra £75k for tribunals - Murphy

21 June, 2019

Sinn Féin Councillor Ryan Murphy has urged the Department of Communities to step up to the mark and provide the remaining funding required for benefit tribunals.

The North Belfast Councillor was commenting after Sinn Féin Councillors on Belfast City Council’s Strategic Policy and Resources Committee proposed £75,000 in funding for the service.

Ryan Murphy said:

“Tribunal services across Belfast are facing a funding shortage for the coming year.

“They have only managed to secure £66,000 from the Department of Communities. This is not good enough and falls short of what’s required to run this service.

“At today’s committee meeting, Sinn Féin proposed that Council should provide £75,000 to support the City Wide Tribunal Service.

“It’s a vital service that puts money and life-changing advice back into the hands of those who need it most by providing representation at benefit tribunals.

“We secured agreement that a cross-party delegation and Council officials would meet with the Department to increase pressure on them to step up to the mark and fund the remaining shortfall.”
