O’Neill calls for HIA legislation to be fast-tracked following Bradley response
The British Secretary of State must expedite the process of introducing legislation to support victims and survivors of historical institutional abuse, Leas Uachtarán Shinn Féin Michelle O’Neill has said.
Michelle O’Neill was speaking after Karen Bradley today responded to the joint correspondence from the leaders of the main political parties which addressed all of the issues regarding the implementation of the HIA Inquiry which the British Government had sought clarity on.
Michelle O’Neill said: “The British Secretary of State has now responded to the party leaders and confirmed that she intends to redraft the proposed legislation as required to reflect the consultation process responses and the needs of victims.
“That is progress but she needs to ensure that the legislation is expedited.
“Victims and survivors have already endured far too much foot-dragging and stalling tactics from this British Government.
“The priorities and needs of victims and survivors are now abundantly clear. The British Secretary of State needs to get on with addressing them through the required legislation.”
