More support needed to help children deal with trauma - Gildernew
Sinn Féin MP Michelle Gildernew has said more support is needed for children and young people who have been through adverse childhood experiences.
The Fermanagh and South Tyrone MP said:
"I met today with representatives from WAVE Trauma at Westminster to discuss the impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACE) on children and young people in the north.
"Adverse childhood experiences can lead to negative, lifelong emotional and physical problems.
“It is clear that young people who have been through adverse childhood experiences are more likely to experience mental health problems and are at greater risk of other health problems such as heart issues and cancer.
"A society which is more aware and informed about trauma and its impact would help create resilient and healthy future generations.
"Children and young people who experience trauma should be supported and need to receive appropriate care from statutory agencies to reduce the long-term impact of adverse childhood experiences throughout their lives."
