Human Rights research on citizenship welcomed – Senator Niall Ó Donnghaile
Sinn Féin Senator Niall Ó Donnghaile has welcomed news from the Human Rights Commissions North and South, that they are commissioning dedicated research into the citizenship clauses of the Good Friday Agreement and the impact of Brexit on our EU citizenship.
Speaking in Dublin today Seanadóir Ó Donnghaile said;
“The announcement by both Human Rights Commissions that they are seeking expressions of interest for dedicated research into the citizenship aspects of the GFA and the impact of Brexit, indicates the complexity of the issue and shows that concerns about both are in no way decreasing.
“The Human Rights Commissions have been vocal in expressing the real and live concerns regarding the failure of the British to codify in the law the citizenship clause of the Good Friday Agreement, as well as the tangible impact Brexit will have on our future rights, entitlements and protections as EU citizens.
“This is an important piece of research which I hope can help shape and contribute to the existing debate that’s taking place in our society regarding these matters.”
