Trade Union support for banning trade with Occupied Territories welcomed – Ó Donnghaile
Sinn Féin Senator Niall Ó Donnghaile has welcomed news that 34 European trade unions, representing millions of workers, have called on the European Commission and European governments to ban trade with illegal Israeli settlements in Palestine.
Speaking today, Seanadóir Ó Donnghaile;
“Sinn Féin Senators used our ‘Private Members Business’ time in the Seanad to ensure the historic passage of Senator Frances Black’s ‘Occupied Territories Bill’ and my party colleague Deputy Sean Crowe continues to support the legislation as it passes through Committee. We are proud to endorse this pioneering and just legislation.
“Today’s news that 34 trade union groups, representing millions of workers across Europe, have called on governments across the EU, and the EU Commission itself, to ban trading with illegal settlements in Palestine is an important, humane, and democratic expression of solidarity.
“Irish signatories to the letter include the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU), Fórsa, NIPSA, Mandate, the Communications Workers Union (CWU), Unison, Unite the Union, and both Belfast and Derry Trade Union Councils.
“With the ‘Occupied Territories Bill’, we have an unprecedented opportunity to practically stand against apartheid and war crimes. However, despite the Bill commanding majority support in the Seanad and Dáil, Fine Gael are attempting to stop the Bill passing all the necessary legislative stages. Fine Gael should heed the call from the trade union movement, do the right thing, and ensure this legislation is passed as soon as possible.”
