‘Regional disparities in the Social Economy must be tackled’ - Kelly
Sinn Féin Councillor Catherine Kelly is seeking discussions with Social Enterprise NI, to explore ways of tackling regional disparities within the social economy.
The Fermanagh and Omagh District Councillor was speaking following the publication of the ‘Re-balancing the NI Economy 2019’ report which revealed that only four percent of the North’s social enterprises are located in Fermanagh and Tyrone.
She said: "Despite the many positive findings recorded in the report, it is disappointing that the number of social enterprises in Fermanagh and Tyrone is substantially lower than in other areas.
"The report also indicates that there is a significant disparity in terms of the number of social enterprises in urban compared to rural areas.
"Given that the social economy has a track record of delivering social value and providing sustainable jobs, it is important that we see the sector delivering more of these benefits in Fermanagh and Tyrone.
"I have requested a meeting with Social Enterprise NI to look at what we in Council can do to promote and grow the sector in our area.”
