All-Island League proposals merit serious consideration – Ó Laoghaire
Sinn Féin TD for Cork South-Central Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire has today said that the All-Island League proposals that are being brought forward by Kieran Lucid merit serious consideration.
Speaking this morning, Teachta Ó Laoghaire said;
“Having read much of the media reports in the past week about new proposals being brought forward regarding a possible merger of both the League of Ireland and Northern Ireland Football League, and while clubs and the associations must approach this carefully, I do feel that there is significant potential in such a proposal and that this could be a positive for both leagues.
“Certainly, the plans need to be outlined in detail but, on the face of it, they merit serious consideration.
“Despite their best efforts, and loyal and enthusiastic following from supporters, volunteers, and players, both leagues have suffered from a lack of funding and support from their respective governing bodies.
“These plans present us with a chance to discuss the future of both leagues and of domestic football in Ireland and how they can be made more sustainable going forward.
“No doubt, clubs both north and south will have concerns which must be heard. I hope that Mr Lucid’s plans are given due consideration by the FAI and the IFA.”
