Brexit will be disastrous for bio-industry - Anderson
Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has expressed concern for the future of the north’s bio-industry post-Brexit.
Speaking after a report by the Bio Industry Association stressed the the importance of collaborated pharma and biotech trade, Martina Anderson said:
“Regulatory alignment across the island of Ireland has allowed research and development to be carried out unhindered for many years.
“Any hardening of the border would be detrimental for research and development, but despite repeated warnings from sectors about the disastrous impact of a no-deal Brexit, that risk is increasing.
“This will put additional strain on the health service as without partnership the NHS could face delays in accessing new medicines and vaccinations which could put citizens and patients at risk.
“The Irish and British governments must clarify what preparations are in place to protect the bio-industry in the result of a crash out Brexit.
“In the event of a no-deal Brexit, the British government must announce plans for a referendum on Irish unity to give people the opportunity to remain in the EU and to protect all sectors.”
