‘British government must ‘act now’ to legislate for HIA victims’ - Dillon

2 July, 2019 - by Linda Dillon

Sinn Féin MLA Linda Dillon has said there is now an urgent responsibility on the British government to legislate in the interests of victims and survivors of historical institutional abuse.

The Sinn Féin victims and survivors spokesperson said:

"I welcome today's meeting between the new victims and survivors advocate and those who have experienced historical institutional abuse.

"It was important that Brendan McAllister's first meeting as the new advocate was with the victims and survivors to hear their concerns at first hand.

"At today's meeting the victims and survivors made it clear to Brendan McAllister that he needs to relay their concerns to the British government and demand that it acts now.

"There is an urgent responsibility on the British government to act now to legislate in the interests of victims and survivors, including redress.

"The British government needs to end its disgraceful pattern of stalling and do the right thing by these victims and survivors who have already suffered so much."
