Kearney congratulates new ICTU President
Sinn Féin MLA Declan Kearney has congratulated incoming President of Irish Congress of Trades Unions (ICTU), Gerry Murphy on taking up his new position.
The Sinn Féin National Chairperson said:
"I wish Gerry Murphy well during his new mandate as President of ICTU.
"Gerry has provided important leadership as an Irish trade union leader, most recently as Chairperson of NIC-ICTU. He has a proven track record in standing up for working people and disadvantaged communities, especially as a teacher with Irish traveller children.
"Gerry takes office at a time of great challenge and change in Ireland. The onset of Brexit in particular, represents an existential crisis for Irish workers' rights, economic stability north and south, and investment and employment.
"Congress has already played a very important strategic role in addressing all of these issues. I am confident Gerry Murphy will bring additional capacity to these responsibilities during his Presidential tenure.
"Securing the living wage for Irish workers in all sectors north and south, eradicating precarious work, and maximising trade union and collective bargaining rights are key priorities in the time ahead. Sinn Féin is pledged to continue supporting Congress on all these campaigns.
"I look forward to meeting Gerry Murphy soon, and then working closely with him in his new position as President of Congress, as well as with the wider ICTU leadership and all union affiliates."
