Economic downturn ‘no surprise’ amid Brexit chaos - Ó Muilleoir
The latest warning predicting an economic downturn should come as no surprise given the impact of Brexit, Sinn Féin MLA Máirtín Ó Muilleoir has said.
The party’s Brexit spokesperson was commenting after the Ulster Bank’s latest private sector survey warned that the North’s economy may have already begun a downturn.
Máirtín Ó Muilleoir commented: “Today I received another sobering assessment by top civil servants in Stormont Castle about the dire consequences of a No Deal Brexit. The latest results from the Ulster Bank should, therefore, come as no surprise given the impact that Brexit is already having in terms of the chaos and uncertainty it is causing in our economy.
“There have been four consecutive months of falling output since March and export orders fell at their fastest pace in almost eight years.
“Unfortunately, we can expect more of this as the Brexit chaos rumbles on and the economic catastrophe will only be magnified in the event of a no-deal crash which the Tories and the DUP seem intent on delivering.
“Small wonder that many within the business community are questioning why the DUP seems hell-bent on endangering the economy in the north.
"They need to step back, listen to the facts, listen to the genuine fears of the business community and abandon their delusional approach."
