Cath Lab Steering Group September completion date ‘unacceptable’ – Cullinane
Sinn Féin TD for Waterford David Cullinane has criticised Minister for Health Simon Harris for the delay in the publication of the review into cardiac services.
Deputy Cullinane said:
“Today, I received confirmation from the Minister for Health that the national review into cardiac services will only confirm its completion date in September. In other words, it will be months after that until the actual review is completed.
“This is unacceptable. The people of Waterford and the South East need answers, they need certainty, and they need delivery.
“The Minister restated the aims of the review, which is to achieve optimal patient outcomes at population level with particular emphasis on the safety, quality and sustainability of the services that patients receive.
“If this is the case, the fact that University Hospital Waterford is in a region of 500,000 people, one where patients have to travel by ambulance to either Cork or Dublin, should be enough to satisfy the need for 24/7 cardiac care at UHW.
“At the same time, the recent installation of a second Cath lab, along with the recent advertisement for an additional interventional cardiologist post, shows that the infrastructure is slowly being put in place for 24/7 cover and it would be wise to build upon it.
“This delay in the completion of the report shows once again that we must remain vigilant and ensure that the national cardiac care strategy finally delivers for Waterford and the South East.”
