DUP no-deal Brexit claims ‘nonsense’ - Archibald

11 July, 2019 - by Caoimhe Archibald

Sinn Féin MLA Caoimhe Archibald has said it’s ‘absolute nonsense’ for the DUP to suggest that they are working to stop a no-deal Brexit.

Commenting after the Department for Economy warned that a crash out Brexit could put 40,000 jobs in the north at risk, the Sinn Féin Brexit Spokesperson said the DUP's reckless approach is dragging the north towards an economic catastrophe.

Caoimhe Archibald commented:

“This stark warning from the Department of Economy that 40,000 jobs could be lost here as a result of Brexit is further evidence of how disastrous a no-deal crash will be for the economy.

“This is the kind of economic catastrophe that the DUP and the Tories are prepared to force upon the people of the north.

“It’s absolute nonsense for the DUP to suggest they are doing all they can to prevent a no-deal Brexit when they are the very party whose illogical opposition to the Backstop and Withdrawal Agreement has driven us to this point.

“We have always been clear, the north cannot be the collateral damage for the Tory/DUP pact and their fantasy Brexit. It is time they stepped back from the brink.

“The Withdrawal Agreement and the backstop is the only deal on the table. It contains the necessary protections to avoid a hard border and to protect our economy.”
