McAleer welcomes progress on Project Stratum
Sinn Féin MLA Declan McAleer has said the party will continue to call for broadband inequality to be addressed and for future investment to prioritise rural areas.
The West Tyrone MLA was speaking following confirmation from the Department for the Economy that the tender for Project Stratum is progressing and the department plan to issue the contract notice today.
Declan McAleer said:
“Many rural areas are disadvantaged in terms of access to high speed broadband. It is a reality that poor broadband has a real impact on the lives of people in rural communities, who can’t work or study from home, and can’t access basic public services or shop online.
“I welcome the fact that Project Stratum is out to tender and that potential bidders are able to access the selection questionnaire via eTendersNI.
“I was part of a Sinn Féin delegation which met the department earlier this year following the public consultation and since then we have been in regular contact with senior officials in the Telecoms branch of the department.
“Sinn Féin have been consistently calling for this inequality to be addressed and for future investment to prioritise rural areas and we will continue to engage with the Department for the Economy as the project progresses.”
