There can be no changes to the Backstop to appease any new Brexiteer Prime Minister – Crowe
Sinn Féin TD and spokesperson for Brexit Seán Crowe has called on an Taoiseach Leo Varadkar to clarify his position on the backstop following his appearance on the Seán O’Rourke show this morning where he appeared to say that the backstop may be altered once negotiations begin with the incoming British Prime Minister.
The Dublin South-West TD said:
“The backstop is the backstop and, regardless of who is in 10 Downing St, Ireland’s position should be clear and unchanging. A hard border on the island of Ireland is not in the interests of any who live or work in Ireland, north or south.
“I am calling on an Taoiseach to clarify this position and make it clear that there is no scenario in which his government would consent to any attempt water down the backstop to appease a new Brexiteer Prime Minister and their fantasist solutions to problems of their making.”
