Those not behind Garda reform should be offered an exit strategy - Martin Kenny TD
Sinn Féin’s spokesperson for Justice Martin Kenny TD has welcomed the introduction of a voluntary severance package for senior Garda Síochána members.
The scheme is in planning, but it is reported that no senior managers will leave the force under the programme this year.
Deputy Kenny said:
“The Commission on the Future of Policing in its ‘The Future of Policing in Ireland’ report recommended that a one-off targeted severance option should be available to those members who did not feel they could get fully behind the proposed transformation and restructuring within the force.
“The package is being targeted at those at the rank of Superintendent and above and the number allowed to avail of the option will be at the discretion of the Garda Commissioner.
“The Commission on the Future of Policing were clear that most Garda personnel consulted welcomed the proposed changes and looked forward to a more fulfilling career within the Garda Síochána when changes were implemented.
"However, not all would want to be part of that transformation and this package is to offer them an exit strategy.
“I believe that if the necessary Garda reform is to be a success, then those implementing it will have to be fully supportive and those that cannot throw themselves fully behind it should be put under no pressure to remain.”
