Post Brexit funding package should apply on all-Ireland basis - Anderson
Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said the EU’s post-Brexit financial package for Ireland should apply on both sides of the border.
Speaking from Brussels, Martina Anderson said:
“Now is the time for the EU to show how committed it is to protecting the Ireland both north and south in the event of Brexit.
“There are reports that a multi-billion euro aid package being prepared to mitigate the damage that Brexit will do to the Irish economy. It is vital that this funding protects the all-island economy.
“It is increasingly clear that Brexit will damage the economy north and south. The only way to protect the Irish economy is to protect all regions on the island and that means a continuation of EU funding for the north after Brexit.
“Sinn Féin worked to ensure that EU continue the cross-border funding of programmes such as PEACE and INTERREG IV in the event of Brexit, their commitment to do so tells us that there are many in the European Parliament that recognize the importance of continuing to support the north of Ireland after Brexit.
“But this needs to be expanded to all funding designed to mitigate the economic destruction that will be caused if the north is dragged out of the EU by Britain.
“I am calling on the EU and the Irish government to support an all-Ireland approach to EU funding in the event of Brexit. From all of the meetings I have had with politicians, officials, and diplomats in Europe I am certain that there exists a political will to see the EU step up and defend all of Ireland from the effects of Brexit.
“We have heard the rhetoric now we need to see that translated into tangible support for the north.”
