Moves towards free travel for Dublin homeless families welcomed – Mitchell

23 July, 2019 - by Denise Mitchell TD

Sinn Féin Dublin Spokesperson Denise Mitchell TD has welcomed reports that Leap Cards providing free travel on Dublin public transport for homeless families are to be extended into August.

Deputy Mitchell said:

“This news is very welcome. It is an issue I have been raising on the Children and Youth Affairs Committee for some time. It is very important that young people and their families, who are living in emergency accommodation through no fault of their own, are supported in this way.

“Many young people living in emergency accommodation find themselves isolated as they are often living quite a distance from where their friends are. As many of these hubs and other centres do not allow visitors, it is important that young people have the ability to socialise and attend sporting and other events. The provision of free public transport during non-term time will go some way towards addressing this issue of social isolation.

“I recognise that this is a once-off move, but I would call on the Government to include provision for free public transport for homeless families into the upcoming Budget, and look at extending this beyond Dublin.”
