RTÉ Investigates programme in respect of childcare demands an urgent response - Kathleen Funchion TD
Responding to the broadcast of RTÉ Investigates ‘Crèches, Behind Closed Doors’ programme this evening, Sinn Féin’s Spokesperson on Children and Youth Affairs, Kathleen Funchion TD has said that issues raised by the programme demand an urgent response from the Minister for Children Katherine Zappone.
Teachta Funchion said:
“Tonight’s programme highlights significant issues in respect of childcare provision that cannot be ignored and warrant an immediate response from the Minister for Children Katherine Zappone.
"The childcare facility featured in tonight’s programme operated without proper registration for up to fourteen months, meaning it was not subject to regulatory inspections and checks during that time yet it continued to operate. That parents, paying up to €1,000 per month were unaware of this fact is incredibly worrying and is a matter of serious concern. What is most distressing, however, is the shocking nature of the consistent breaches of Tusla regulations highlighted by the programme.
"Children deserve the highest level of care possible and parents should expect the highest standards. The vast majority of providers do just that, but tonight's programme illustrates that there are bad ones out there. This cannot be allowed to happen again and I am calling on the Minister to act on the findings of tonight’s programme without delay."
