Questions to be asked of Minister Zappone and Tusla – Funchion

25 July, 2019 - by Kathleen Funchion TD

Sinn Féin spokesperson for Children and Youth Affairs Kathleen Funchion TD has reacted angrily to the revelations of the RTÉ Investigates programme last night that showed how children were treated in a for profit childcare facility.

Teachta Funchion said that this Government and the Minister need to get real about the Early Years sector and the child care sector and their laissez-faire approach to these services is not an appropriate use of taxpayers’ money.

The Carlow-Kilkenny TD said:

“After watching the RTÉ Investigates programme last night, I have to say, as a parent, I am extremely angry and upset.

“I found it extremely disturbing to watch those poor children and how they were treated.

“There are huge questions to be asked of the Minister and by Tusla.

“It would seem that there was issues highlighted last September and earlier this year in February.

“Yet, these creche doors remained open.

“I think we need to see the immediate closure of these creches while an investigation takes place to ensure that children are being cared for in a safe proper and caring environment.

“That is key to it all. Also, this Government and the Minister need to get real about the Early Years sector and the child care sector.

“It is not a for profit sector. It should not be seen as that.

“It should be seen as an investment in our children in their future in nourishing them and encouraging them to be the very best that they can be.

“It should not be the for profit sector that we saw last night.

“And it's about time that this government used the public money and taxpayers’ money in the appropriate way and ensure that we have good quality affordable accessible child care that cherishes the workers, as well as the children.”
