Older people facing lengthy waits for cataract surgery - Eoin Ó Broin TD
Sinn Féin TD for Dublin Mid-West Eoin Ó Broin has commented on figures releases by the HSE which show that the number of older people awaiting cataract surgery in Dublin is very high.
Deputy Ó Broin said:
“Figures released to my colleague Louise O’Reilly by the HSE have detailed the extent of waiting times and waiting lists for cataract surgery in Dublin.
“Across the Capital there are three hospitals, the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear, St. Vincent’s and the Mater, with a combined total number of patients waiting for cataract surgery is at 2,581.
“57 patients are waiting for over a year for treatment at these hospitals.
“The current system is not working for patients and it needs to change.
“I know many constituents who are sitting and waiting for their cataract surgery as their eyesight deteriorates.
“The HSE and the Minister for Health must to more to ensure waiting times are tackled and our older people are not put through unnecessary delays.”
