Sinn Féin MP Francie Molloy has said comments from the head of the newly established British government Office of Veterans Affairs are an insult to the victims of British state violence and collusion.
The Mid Ulster MP said:
"The British government's defence minister and head of the newly established Office of Veterans Affairs, Johnny Mercer, are yet another calculated insult to victims of British state violence and collusion between British forces and unionist death squads.
"The creation of this new office will be viewed by many campaigners and victims as a tactic for the British government to continue to obstruct efforts to address the legacy of the conflict and create another smokescreen to hide the role it played.
"It is further evidence that this British government's policy is aimed at giving current and former British soldiers immunity from prosecution.
"Suggestions of vexatious prosecution are total nonsense. Any attempts to create a hierarchy of victims by protecting perpetrators of murders and other serious crime committed by British state forces are totally unacceptable”.
